I think that Mill meant that over what people think and what people look like or what physical characteristics have all people are self ruling. This quote goes to show that all people are created equal. Individuals should have equal opportunities for example, if you are applying for a job the best candidate should be chosen. Sex, race, age, or health should not have anything to do with being hired. I think that this quote would be in a larger volume entitled on liberty because the quote has everything to do with liberty. It shows that individuals can rule themselves and should rule themselves. What I find interesting is that this was written in the 19th century when slavery was still a thing. I imagine that Mill’s statement must have opened some eyes and maybe got a movement started. I think that this is a very powerful quote. It has deep meaning and really gets the reader thinking about freedom and the current issues in today’s world. Overall, it leaves me thinking that is there really a free world?
